Love is the Law

An afternoon of encounters curated by

The Aunties Collective

conversations

During a gathering with coffee and cake, The Aunties Collective will explore the gap between the daily reality of alternative families and the legal frameworks that govern them.

The event will acknowledge the injustices and challenges that face family relationships and provide a space to explore change. A scholar will share new, research-based insights, The Aunties Collective will go into changes in family law that have come out of the grassroots movement, and firsthand testimony will bring practical experiences to the conversation. These perspectives will invite a dialogue with the audience and the exploration of new ways of thinking about care, kinship, and recognition.

Between love as it is experienced in practice and the law as it stands on paper, Love is the Law offers space for otherness.

The Aunties Collective is committed to critical inquiry into and a new interpretation of kinship, beyond traditional boundaries. The collective consists of 8 members based in Belgium, whose work spans activism, visual arts, performance, technology, law, fashion, and participatory methodologies. The collective was founded in 2024 with the aim of building a community and developing tools for people engaged in kinship and alternative family forms.
