Africa is/in the Future

Africa is/in the Future aims to shed light on issues and (re)presentations related to Afro-descendant artists and practices from the continent and its diaspora. The festival was launched in 2016 and since then quickly became a must-see multidisciplinary festival in Brussels. Since 2023, Marie Umuhoza, as artistic director and programmer of the festival, and Mylène Lauzon have taken the reins of the festival, designing it more specifically around the performing arts and developing it within La Maison du Spectacle – La Bellone, alongside its team and partners. 

For the 2026 edition of Africa is/in the Future, the festival is undergoing a transition. Not a revolution, but a refocusing. The theme of the latest edition, which focused on communities, is shifting its focus to individuals—their practices, their tensions and their intricacies. This edition explores choices, contradictions and resistance, and is thus structured around two inseparable concepts: complicity and complexity. As with every edition, the festival is open to all, but a more targeted invitation is extended to Black people and people of African descent, from the continent and the diasporas in Brussels.
