ur phantom eyes, our crystalized pains

When an eye is an eye and loses its gaze, images remain there as a phantom or memory. Pain is not an emotion, but a sensation which is most easily empathised with. When the water flowing from the eyes creates an ocean, you will be reborn once again from its amniotic fluid and will see a new body.

Adem Ouhaibia
Shaharazad

Shaharazad deals with movement methods of hip hop in the realm of contemporary dance. Adem Ouhaibia researched together with Marita Schwanke how these methods can be translated and transformed considering people’s different backgrounds and knowledge. The result of this research was the practice Breaking technologies – the five elements of breaking and the performance Shaharazad.

Shaharazad talks about creating and leaving traces as recordings of the past but also imagination of the future. It questions how to read dance and share it with a diverse audience. Inspired by Roland Barthes’ idea of "The Death of the Author", we concentrate on different experiences that come together, drift apart or shift around. How far is this accessible to an outsider? Just like the audience, the performers and the creators speak different languages but also have things in common. They have a shared interest in the arts and in dance, guided by a web of knowledge and pathways that had been acquired and lived. We are imagining the future, and this piece is part of it.

The friction between the so-called ‘high art’ (contemporary dance) and ‘low art’ (hip hop) is part of the future we will imagine.
