‘VOCABULARIUM’ is a solo for Rosas dancer Cynthia Loemij. The starting points for this production are David Van Reybrouck’s books ‘Revolusi: Indonesia and the Birth of the Modern World’ and ‘De kolonisatie van de toekomst (The Colonisation of the Future)’; as well as the writing of Jannetje Visser-Roosendaal (1899 1990), Cynthia Loemij’s great-grandmother. She wrote more than fifty novels, including ‘Tot in den Dood (Until Death)’, which in 1941 was considered Resistance Literature and confiscated.
• As the daughter of a Dutch mother and an Indonesian father, the colonial history of Indonesia and its struggle for independence are part of Cynthia Loemij’s personal story. The solo explores this colonial history and how established power structures shape the current response to the climate crisis, in effect colonizing the future. Cynthia Loemij started her trajectory with Rosas in 1991. In the past 30 years, she danced in 35 different productions. In this sense, one could say that Cynthia embodies the history of the Rosas dance company. Combining text and movement, ‘VOCABULARIUM’ explores how different layers of histories and memories are intertwined in the dancer’s body.
