Leçons de Ténèbres (10+)

dance
16—17.12.2022

In Leçons de Ténèbres, four bodies, three adults and a child become the mouthpieces of stories that have been forgotten or that we have tried to make disappear. These people burrow, hunched and curved, until they unearth the invisible. They transform, disappear and metamorphose. In turn, they bring forth visions and assist and challenge them. For this new creation, Betty Tchomanga continues her research on Voodoo cults and crosses them with questions of climatic and social emergency.

The Leçons de Ténèbres is originally a liturgical musical genre from the 17th century that sets the lamentations of Jeremiah on the disappearance of the wall of Jerusalem to music. It is also the title of a film made by Werner Herzog in 1992 about the burning of 732 oil wells by Iraqi forces withdrawing from Kuwait. In this film, the director presents a vision of apocalypse as a long poem about the end of the Earth.

Betty Tchomanga's Leçons de Ténèbres also mourns the destruction of the earth. It speaks of darkness and from darkness, of seeking the light but also of exploring our hidden and buried stories. In her previous piece, Mascarades, presented at Kaaistudios in 2021, Betty Tchomanga explored the mythical figure of Mami Wata, the main deity of certain Voodoo cults. For her new creation, she continues her research, particularly in Benin, and crosses Voodoo themes with questions of decolonial ecology.

Betty Tchomanga studied modern literature at the Sorbonne in Paris and contemporary dance at the CNDC in Angers. She works regularly with Marlene Montero Freitas and has already shared the stage with, among others, Emmanuelle Huyn, Alain Buffart, Fanny de Chaillé, Anne Collod, Herman Diephuis and Nina Santès. We have already welcomed Tchomanga in 2021 to Kaaitheater with Mascarades, her first piece as a choreographer.
