IN KOOR!
To begin and to begin again
IN KOOR! is a musical theatre project by the Brussels-based performance artist Myriam Van Imschoot and Willem de Wolf, an actor and author at de KOE. Along with unpractised singers – theatre students at the KASK Ghent and twelve amateur actors – they are exploring the rehearsal process of a choral production. Choirs rehearse endlessly so that they can ultimately achieve unison and harmony. The misses, repetitions and mistakes that occur in the process form the performance material of this production. Because people are at their most vulnerable when they can’t (yet) do what they most desire.
IN KOOR! is not only an ode to the wrong tone, flat notes and the shaky voice that has not yet found the right balance and cadence, it is also a carrousel in which the authors zoom in and out on the process itself, rehearsals, improvement, hope, (dis)harmony, and on the way individuality relates to the collective. If you are looking for cantatas and virtuoso vocal parts, you will have to make do with musical theatre that turns singing out of tune into art.
