Sfumato
Slightly blurred
The term ‘sfumato’ is applied to a painting in which the contours are slightly blurred or hazy. Rachid Ouramdane has created a sfumato choreography in which the scenes flow into one another and the boundaries of the bodies appear to dissolve. The dancers evolve in a landscape of mist and rain. The choreography is a metaphor for several ecological themes: the loss of habitats, the exile to unknown places, the memory that remains, and so on. It fits in with Ouramdane’s poetics of the testimony, to which he also gave shape in earlier productions together with the writer Sonia Chiambretto and composer Jean-Baptiste Julien.
• The French choreographer Rachid Ouramdane also danced for Meg Stuart and others before founding his own company, called L’A, in 1997. In his work he uses video as a tool to visualise the memory of the body. His work is often documentary and politically charged, based on the meticulous gathering of testimonies.
