Gavrilo Princip

theatre
10—11.10.2014

The powerful hand of chance

On 28th June 1914 Gavrilo Princip and five friends made an attempt on the life of Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Habsburg throne, during his visit to Sarajevo. The attack failed. Feeling disillusioned and hungry, Gavrilo entered a bakery. When he came out again, the crown prince was just passing by. The car stopped a little way ahead and then reversed back to the same spot. The last thing Franz Ferdinand saw was a little man with narrow shoulders and a thin moustache.

Gavrilo Princip is about a world that is on the verge of disappearing, about a peasant who overthrows the elite, about the subjectivity of historiography and about the powerful hand of chance. A manic, orgiastic, theatrical reconstruction, which is ultimately reminiscent only of a battlefield.

De Warme Winkel is a theatre company that has a love of history and an intense fascination for its own incomprehensible and polymorphous age. In the group’s performances they play with styles, forms, expectations, clichés, icons and the audience.
