Elena's Aria
Five Women
In Fase (1982) Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker immediately made a name for herself in the international dance world. A year later, she confirmed her renown with Rosas danst Rosas. Things moved quickly for the young choreographer, with international tours and rave reviews! In Elena’s Aria (1984), the third production, she seemed to evaluate her work and seek an answer to the question of how to proceed.
Fase and Rosas danst Rosas were precise, almost mathematical choreographic works set to a compelling musical score, though in Rosas danst Rosas De Keersmaeker occasionally allowed a hint of emotion. In Elena’s Aria the music disappears into the background, silence is a part of the composition, film images and words are given a place in the performance, and the language of movement and composition are freer. Above all, the show floats on a stream of emotions. On stage five women struggle with love and hate, pleasure and pain. This makes Elena’s Aria a particularly rich and haunting dance performance.
