music
16—19.12.2009
At the still point of the turning world. Neither flesh nor fleshless;
Neither from nor towards; at the still point, there the dance is,
But neither arrest nor movement. And do not call it fixity,
Where past and future are gathered. Neither movement from nor towards,
Neither ascent nor decline. Except for the point, the still point,
There would be no dance, and there is only the dance.

- from Four Quartets 1: Burnt Norton by T.S. Eliot

Harmony and difference

Last season, Rosas celebrated its 25th anniversary at the Kaaitheater with a rerun of their debut production Rosas danst Rosas. This season, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker's company will be our guest twice: with a new creation The Song and with Zeitung, a production that was enthusiastically received at its premiere at the beginning of 2008 in the Théâtre de la Ville in Paris.

Together with the Rosas dancers, the choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and pianist Alain Franco go in search of the unstable combination of music and dance, choreography and improvisation, romance and disillusion. In a broad historical gesture, Bach, Schönberg and Webern traverse the geometrical principles and improvisational wild cards of the Rosas choreography. In harmony and difference, in unison or counterpoint.

Music and dance do not meet on the basis of any similarity or parallel, but on the intersection of the two. Alain Franco provides live piano accompaniment for the nine Rosas dancers. The set and lighting are by Maatschappij Discordia’s Jan Joris Lamers.

Press reviews
