Try to forget about cars, and meetings, cigarettes, and road accidents. Try to forget about births and deaths and funerals. And bereavements. Try not to think about dustbins, and litter on the street. Try not to think about agonies and bitterness and smiles. And sadness. And the kind of bitterness that comes from making one really big mistake. And the kind of regret that comes from making many many many many small mistakes...”
De openingsscène van First Night voorspelt het al: dit is Forced Entertainment in zijn meest pure vorm. Op de scène staan acht performers. Onvoorspelbaar. Paaiend. Aanvallend. Herkenbaar. Zijn ze eerlijk tegen ons, of spelen ze een spelletje? Wat begint als een warm welkomstwoord ontaardt al snel in een wervelwind van duistere toekomstvoorspellingen, psychotisch-escapistische scènes en onverwachte danspasjes.
Het spel tussen speler en toeschouwer is een van de stokpaardjes van het gezelschap. Het publiek wordt eerst in vertrouwen genomen, dan weer beschimpt of belogen. First Night is theater op het scherp van de snee, “diverting, accessible and viciously funny” (The Guardian). De voorstelling was een succesnummer tijdens het Kunstenfestivaldesarts in 2002 en is nu voor het eerst te zien in het Kaaitheater.
