Liebe Jelinek
of is liefde een naar sprookje?

‘I am not a monster, but I do write about the destructive. People swoon at stories about romantic adventures, when the sun goes down in Majorca. But who does the dirty work? I have to do it. I clean up the sentimental muck. That’s my job. In literature, I am the woman who cleans up the mess, I am the woman with the dustbin. I am the garbage processor of love.’ – ELFRIEDE JELINEK
Looking for insights about love, Maatschappij Discordia decided to consult the Austrian Nobel Prize winner Elfriede Jelinek. While last season, Marguerite Duras accompanied them in a lifelong attempt to articulate the first experience of love, with Jelinek, Discordia has immediately encountered provocation. What is the image that this author – a virtuoso at unmasking clichés – sketches of love… and the female experience of love? The actors draw on excerpts from novels, interviews and of course also De prinsessendrama’s – in which silenced and deceased icons like Jackie Kennedy, Sylvia Plath and Ingeborg Bachmann are given a voice. Author Marie Louise von Franz also rushes to their aid by holding up the motives of fairy-tale heroines like Sleeping Beauty and Snow White as a pre-Freudian mirror.
• Liebe Jelinek is part 10 of the Weiblicher Akt series, which centres on the female perspective. The last four instalments of the series were presented at the Kaaistudios. This tenth part also stars Sara de Bosschere from the Roovers.
