Theatre, Performance, and Ritual
Theatre and ritual are intertwined in the Ramlila of Ramnagar, India. The 31 day performance enacts the story of the warrior-king, Rama. Staged in many locations throughout the city, the Ramlila features gods, demons, royals, animals, and ordinary people. Richard Schechner – theatre director, professor at the Tisch School of the Arts, and founder of The Performance Group – has researched the event since the 1970s.
