A monologue as a process of mourning
A young banker (Eelco Smits) returns from New York to his hometown of Amsterdam to attend his younger brother’s funeral. On the days before the funeral he writes letters — alternately wistful, rebellious or resigned in tone — in an attempt to get in touch with the brother he left behind. This monologue is his process of mourning. The American singer-songwriter Mark Eitzel (of the indie rock band American Music Club) has written Go where the love is specifically for this performance.

• Simon Stephens (b. 1971) is one of Britain’s most acclaimed playwrights. In 2007 Theater Heute named him the best foreign playwright of the year. In 2010 he was commissioned by Theatre Group Amsterdam and Schauspielhaus Essen to write Ubu, after the work of Alfred Jarry. Stephens’ plays are often brutal family portraits, deeply rooted in social realism, but they also have a lyrical and optimistic tone that have given him a completely unique place in contemporary British playwriting.
