A play/concert in three voices
What can be told about the things experienced in the Buchenwald concentration camp? What is the essence of this experience? The Holocaust is often described as ‘unimaginable’, ‘indescribable’ and ‘unspeakable’. Nevertheless, it is a part of man’s inherent nature to attempt the impossible over and over again.
In Wald, three voices are confronted with one another. The actors Tom de Hoog and Hilde Wils tell us the stories of those who were interned in the camps (including Imre Kertesz and Jorge Semprun) and of those who try to imagine what it was like (like Marguerite Duras who is waiting for the return of her husband, who was deported to Buchenwald). The third voice is that of music, the art which can probably approach the unmentionable and unimaginable more closely than any other. Seated at the piano is Alain Franco, who presents us with a musical discourse, with music from Bernd-Alois Zimmermann, Johannes Brahms, Ludwig van Beethoven, Robert Schumann a.o.
