Conférence sur rien (1949)
‘I am here and I have nothing to say.’ Met deze woorden begon de Amerikaanse componist, theoreticus en filosoof John Cage in 1949 zijn Lecture on Nothing in de New Yorkse Artists’ Club. De tekst had veel weg van een hypnotiserende partituur die de structuur volgde van Cage’s recente muzikale composities – inclusief zijn bijzondere aandacht voor stilte. Tegelijk was het een artistiek manifest: een stream of consciousness van poëzie, filosofie en autobiografische fragmenten waarin cruciale vragen kwamen bovendrijven. Wat hebben we nodig? Waar vinden we geluk? En hoe kun je van de wereld houden?
