De verbouwing
A slow comedy
Ylka and Thomas are having their house renewed. Two renovators are at work there for months. During their coffee breaks, they discuss the coming stages: how long should that wall be? Where should the fusebox be placed? In the background radio Contact is playing, the coffee is served lukewarm, there are no more cookies and, between the lines, a bit of discomfort weaves itself into place. In a like tempo to that of the construction site, a slow comedy develops.
De verbouwing (1998) is a play by the Dutch theatre group Carver. The name refers to the American writer Raymond Carver (1938-1988), the master of dirty realism. The dialogues seem harmless but are full of innuendo, hidden accusations and cunning revenge. De verbouwing (The Renovation) is a sublime blend of humour and sadness.
