Although We Fell Short

theatre
26—27.11.2011

Comical and unsettling

The writer and theatre-maker Tim Etchells builds up a new performance – a speech for the performance artist Kate McIntosh – made from the ruins and fragments of many other speeches. Material from a range of contemporary and historical political
campaigns, party congresses, debates, resignations and revolutionary
tracts finds its way into unexpected dialogues and collisionsin this work, in which sense itself is strained and stretched,
constantly cohering, dissolving and then momentarily re-cohering. Although We Fell Short is comical and unsettling, subjecting the familiar rhetorical strategies of political speeches to a test of their linguistic breaking-point.

• Tim Etchells is an artist, writer and performance maker as well as Artistic Director of Forced Entertainment, whose new work we shall be showing in the spring. He made Although We Fell Short at the request of the Kaaitheater. Kate McIntosh will also be our guest with new work in the spring.
