CANCELLED - De tekst van een drama maakt deel uit van 'literatuur', een geschreven vorm van artistieke expressie die meestal in gedrukte vorm verschijnt. Maar drama's worden meestal geschreven om opgevoerd te worden, dat wil zeggen, om podiumvoorstellingen te worden die juist door het combineren van diverse media de betekenisgeving vergroten. Woorden, beelden en geluiden werken samen en versmelten op miraculeuze wijze in het theater. Wat als deze combinatie kijkers en luisteraars zodanig wil beïnvloeden dat zij het theater niet simpelweg verlaten als mensen die kunst waarderen, maar als mensen die theater zien als een aanjager van maatschappelijk discours en ethische debatten?

Towards a Living Place

If we think of films made from minority situations and perspectives as prototypes of possible worlds, we could then ask ourselves how to live and practice these worlds. That is, how to depart from the economy of mere metaphor in order to move from art to an emancipated way of living, a place without an owner. By going through one of his recent texts, Towards a despeaking cinema (a Caribbean hypothesis), Olivier Marboeuf would like to try to imagine the potentialities of minority cinema considered as a practice of collective hallucination that invents one of these unnamable places through cacophony.

On the Matter of Living Through It

In a rather cranky interview with Mediapart recently, Jean Luc Godard, explaining his critique of the news outlet, said: “A fact is something that happens. But we mustn’t forget that it’s also something that doesn’t happen … as far as I’m concerned, what doesn’t happen between us today is much more important than what does happen.” This wouldn’t be a terribly profound socio-epistemological point except for the caveat: “Living through it is another matter.” What does it mean to live through what is not exactly happening? What kind of story can one make of it? What kind of scene does it entail? A talk by Avery F. Gordon on the writing challenges attendant on trying to assess the balance of political forces in the crisis-ridden Euro-American capitalist world.
