In Tundale?s Vision, a sort of forerunner of Dante?s Divine Comedy, the soul of the knight Tundale roams heaven and hell. This twelfth-century Latin text by an Irish monk has been translated into many European languages and contains numerous references to liturgical chants. This allowed the musicologist Katarina Livljanic to make a musical reconstruction, for which she drew upon Latin and Slavonic sources. She and her Dialogos ensemble are among the international top rank when it comes to performing late-mediaeval religious music.

More and more musicians-researchers are exploring very early music. This cycle presents a sample of their discoveries. Dialogos and Sequentia offer musical reconstructions of literary works such as the Edda and The Vision of Tondal. The Capilla Flamenca takes us to a later period, that of the Ars Nova. The ensemble Mala Punica creates instrumental and vocal variations on French and Italian music of the fourteenth century.

Two years ago Peter Vermeersch (of Flat Earth Society) wrote the music for the opera  Heliogabal, after a libretto by the Berlin writer Thomas Jonigk. The performance has now been revived in a concert version. The director is Josse De Pauw. Heliogabal is about the Roman child emperor who – Michael Jackson avant la lettre – rapidly evolved from being the darling of the public to public enemy number one.
