Taking its title from the poem by Wallace Stevens, 13 Ways of Looking at a Blackbird is composed of a series of attempts of looking and being looked at. Apiyemiyekî? is a cinematographic portrait that departs from the archive Casa da Cultura de Urubu where over 3.000 drawings made by the Waimiri-Atroari, a people native to the Brazilian Amazon, during their first literacy excersises, are kept. During these literacy exercises, the most recurrent question posed by the Waimiri-Atroari was: why did Kamña (“the civilized”) killed Kiña (Waimiri-Atraori)? Apiyemiyekî? (Why?).

The main character of Landscapes of Resistance, Sonja, was one of the first female partisans in Yugoslavia and helped lead the resistance in Auschwitz. When we initially encounter her in Landscapes of Resistance, she is a friendly elderly lady with a playful cat on her lap. This is the start of an exceptional journey through her memories of revolutionary books from her student days, her wedding to a communist, the resistance against the German occupiers and her torture after capture as a communist and anti-fascist fighter, right the way through to her escape from the concentration camp. It is an unorthodox documentary: personal and political, sober and lyrical, crystal clear and intimate.

Using rare cinematic, photographic and sound archives, Xaraasi Xanne - Crossing Voices recounts the exemplary adventure of Somankidi Coura, an agricultural cooperative created in Mali in 1977 by western African immigrant workers living in workers’ residences in France. The story of this improbable, utopic return to the homeland follows a winding path that travels through the ecological challenges and conflicts on the African continent from the 1970s to the present day.

Fri 04.03 - Sat 05.03.22

During this two-day study circle with screenings, panel discussions and lectures, you will meet several filmmakers who consider film practice as a form of space-making. How can film lead to a more radical awareness of making space? How can it offer a reflection on the daily struggles of people for whom freedom is a place? How can film undo the violent conditions and infrastructures that perpetuate oppression?

In the film industry gender equality is far from achieved. For this evening, three women delve into their work. With their North African and Middle Eastern film excerpts, they will discuss gender stereotyping, cultural taboos and their own experience as a director or film programmer.

The documentary PUSH shows how real estate companies, hedge funds, private equity firms and real estate investment funds increasingly invest in the (rental) housing market by, for example, buying up entire residential blocks. In some cases, they deliberately let these houses rot in order to demolish them and build (often expensive) residential towers in their place: a scenario that Brussels, unfortunately, knows all too well. These processes raise urgent questions: Whose city is it really? Do we, as residents, still have a say in our neighbourhood? Even more so: do the people we elected still have control over the city? This screening is followed by a q&a with director Fredrik Gertten.

In the same week where you can witness Michiel Vandevelde’s Goldberg Variations and Dances of Death at Kaaitheater, he looks back at nine years of performance making and choreographing by directing a video as an exhibition. Shot in single takes with a drone, you roam through the empty building of PACT Zollverein. Each room holds its own ‘ghosts of the past’ on which the next room builds further. You encounter dancers, dances, sounds, and texts. Traveling through fragments of Michiel’s performances the underlying threads and questions of his work are unraveled.

What is metamorphosis if not a transformation so great that it transcends its original form? Like a song laced with samples and citations, Retour Amont: le Rêve mixes new and old movements, texts by René Char and Foucault and live music from Cage to Schoenberg. Since the performance could not take place in front of a live audience, a film recording was made.

Children from Brussels, Athens and Sarajevo unroll rolls of transparent tape in the streets where they grew up. When they remove the tape, they pick up an imprint of the city. An old magic lantern brings this ultra-realistic diary to life. Divinations brings all these forms and images together in a film and an installation.

In the 1970s, the two World Trade Centre towers crowned the newly developed ‘Little Manhattan’ in Brussels’ Northern District. The project failed, leaving the towers and surrounding area largely abandoned. Since late 2017, the owner of the towers has shown a renewed interest in the area. Closely witnessing the changes from their studio space on the 25th floor of WTC tower 1, Lietje Bauwens and Wouter De Raeve decided to enter the debate by making a film with the actors that claim a voice in the transition.

Rétrospective is Jérôme Bel’s subjective reflection on his own work. He chose eighteen dance fragments from his video archive. Through meticulous editing, he has used them to reconstruct the development of his thinking about dance. By emphasizing the links between dance and politics, he foregrounds central themes in his work. After the film screening, there will be an extended conversation with the choreographer.

The film Mitten follows the final weeks of rehearsal of Mitten wir im Leben sind, the performance by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, her company Rosas and cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras, based on the six cello suites by Johann Sebastian Bach. This intense creative process of continuously reshaping and honing, characterised by De Keersmaeker’s inexhaustible longing for precision and detail, is reflected in the filmmakers’ patient look at the work of the choreographer, the musician and dancers.
