Is dance a language? And if so, how does it speak? In In Other Words, Ingrid Berger Myhre explores the compatibility between dance and language. With the stage as an empty page, the choreographic writing unfolds as a physical discourse with its own syntax, grammar and vocabulary. With ingenuity and charm, Myhre presents a relativizing take on dance.

In their latest creation, Brasil-based choreographers Marcela Levi and Lucía Russo explore the various possibilities offered by the tremolo, a vibration effect between two different notes. By means of Kraftwerk’s and Bruno Tucunduva Ruviaro’s electronic music, tap-dancing, and Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, six dancers produce a minutely detailed choreographic research around vibration in the body.

Based on interviews with dancers from the Arab world,Turning Point questions the misunderstandings, ambiguities, stereotypes, metaphors, metamorphoses, fantasies, prejudices and imaginations linked to perceptions of dance in this region. Through movement rooted in the pelvis, manipulation of costume elements, and live electro-percussive music, Nancy Naous questions the spectator's gaze and challenges images rooted in our collective imagination.

La Raffinerie / Charleroi Danse
Sat 19.06 - Sun 20.06.21

La Chaleur starts from the longing to be one body, a choir of many. How can we be ourselves and the other at the same time? By connecting our voices and our breath, Madeleine Fournier suspects. In other words: by singing. On the basis of the iconic baroque music of Henry Purcell and the figures of the Muses, Fournier creates a unique form between opera and experimental dance. Spectacular and yet intimate, this performance celebrates the cycle of life and death, of bodies that cross each other, of people that pass on warmth.

Students of the Swiss performance school La Manufacture come to Brussels to show their end-of-year projects. Two choreographies will be performed, under the watchful eye of choreographers Simone Aughterlony and Marcelo Evelin. Simone Aughterlony questions the lingering and politically charged notion of the “stranger” through the lens of the collage. Marcelo Evelin displays a brutal flow of bodies confronting each other in their otherness on the music of Brazilian trio Tantão e Os Fita.

In the 21st century, death is everywhere: new incurable diseases, rising suicide rates, the consequences of climate change. How do we relate to death? Dances of Death is a physically intense performance with seven dancers and one singer. Together they propose the physical potential of dancing as the path to redemption. How would a dance of death be danced today?

In The Goldberg Variations, dancers Oskar Stalpaert (Platform-K), Michiel Vandevelde, and Audrey Merilus get to work with Bach's compositions and Steve Paxton's choreography. They take a close look at forty years of development of all kinds of dance practices. How open, democratic and accessible is dance today? Which body images do we prefer, which do we prefer not to see? The music is performed live by accordionist Vincent van Amsterdam.

Advertising, film, magazines, the internet: we are constantly surrounded by images of sexualized bodies that display the intimate and the erogenous. Flesh, fluids, skin, breasts and asses belong to our everyday surroundings. The Blue Piece is a museum version of Mette Ingvartsen’s to come (2005), performed by two dancers at KANAL – Centre Pompidou.

Every age has its wonders of the world: the impossible that people still manage to build – bigger and more impressive than anything we’d seen before. But how remarkable is the small body that invents and creates all these colossuses? In 7, Radouan Mriziga juxtaposes two benchmarks: the built environment, made to impress, and the ultimate wonder of the world: the human body itself.
