La Raffinerie / Charleroi Danse
Fri 31.03.23

In 2015, an X-ray scan revealed that beneath the layers of paint on Kasimir Malevich's famous Black Square hid a racist inscription. Even the supreme abstraction does not appear to be free of politics. Within the lines of a highlighted square, three black performers now turn this tension on its head, seeking an incantatory counterbalance to sharp binary oppositions such as light and dark, reason and feeling, certainty and uncertainty.

With this new creation, Anne Teresa De Keersmaekers shifts her exploration of the relationship between music and dance back to pop music. Creation 2023 not only encourages dance, but also emphasises the need for stories and music that we can relate to and recognise.

EXÓTICA
Le Théâtre Royal des Galeries
Thu 01.06 - Sat 03.06.23

EXÓTICA is an exuberant ritual conceived as a séance through which dancers re-appear as ancestors, as queer and femmes of colour from the past and the present, and come into conversation with the gaze of the audience. Their performative presence opens a space for reenactments; initiating invocations, exorcisms, and a celebration.

Thu 27.10 - Fri 28.10.22

With his political solo The President's Jacket, Congolese dancer, choreographer and activist Lucas Katangila tackles the abuses in eastern Congo. In his choreography balances between supple, flowing movements and a very calculated, sometimes even restrained dance. Until the tension can no longer be held back and the piece erupts, spitting out the violence.

Fri 26.11 - Sun 28.11.21

Departing from the simple action of shirt pulling, common in football as a method of maintaining contact with an opponent, not letting an opponent get away and typically seen as an aggressive act, Ahilan Ratnamohan and a group of performers attempt to push this action to its limits, debunking its aggressive, competitive quality to arrive at something new. In doing so the jerseys begin to take on a new significance.

B**** is as much an intimate moment as a performance, which paves the way for female victims of violence to an individual and collective consciousness. Starting from hip-hop and breakdance, and with martial arts influences such as Kung-fu and classical Khmer dance, Yipoon Chiem tells a story of the loss of the soul's sense of purpose, that makes you angry without having the strength to do anything.

In their latest creation, Brasil-based choreographers Marcela Levi and Lucía Russo explore the various possibilities offered by the tremolo, a vibration effect between two different notes. By means of Kraftwerk’s and Bruno Tucunduva Ruviaro’s electronic music, tap-dancing, and Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, six dancers produce a minutely detailed choreographic research around vibration in the body.

In the 21st century, death is everywhere: new incurable diseases, rising suicide rates, the consequences of climate change. How do we relate to death? Dances of Death is a physically intense performance with seven dancers and one singer. Together they propose the physical potential of dancing as the path to redemption. How would a dance of death be danced today?

In her first creation for a male dancer, the young Canadian choreographer Daina Ashbee uses repetition to attain a form of trance and transformation. She traces the forms of vulnerability that transcend gender. Performer Benjamin Kamino submits to the extremely precise, constantly developing pattern. Where is the dividing line between the restlessness and the playfulness of a naked body? Last year, Ashbee won a prestigious Bessie Award!
