Evaporated Landscapes

Evaporated Landscapes
Evaporated Landscapes
Kaaistudio's
Sat 08.02 - Sat 08.02.14

Evaporated landscapes was Ingvartsen’s first choreography for such materials as foam, fog, light and sound. Here the choreography takes the form of a relationship between ephemeral elements that float around and dissolve in space. Everything is bathed in an atmosphere of peace and tranquillity, fascination and impressions that we experience with a natural wonder.

In Speculations Mette Ingvartsen uses fiction, speculation and description to develop ideas in front of an audience. The body on the stage is part of the performance, but the choreography is in the field of language and in the spectator’s imagination. Although the spectator is not actively involved in the performance his role is essential to its creation. Language and action are equally important in the creation of a virtual performance in the spectator’s mind.

The Extra Sensorial Garden

The Extra Sensorial Garden

Sat 08.02 - Sat 08.02.14

The Extra Sensorial Garden is an invitation to enter a fictional garden. All the visitor’s  senses are stimulated, and together with his own imagination this produces a strong physical experience. There is not always much to see, but all the more to feel. Changes in light, colour, temperature and sound create a sensitive fabric in this artificial nature experiment. How do you experience nature, does it overwhelm you, does it make you feel at peace. Or do you think that nature no longer exists?

Wed 27.03 - Thu 28.03.13

How do we, urban animals of the 21st century, relate to ‘other animals’? German choreographer Martin Nachbar aims to make our relationships with animals transparent through dance. The performance imitates animals in their habitat and in the habitat of contemporary dance (the theatre) and examines the possibilities of moving, feeling and thinking like animals.

In the early seventies, a research project was set up at Columbia University in New York to determine whether apes are capable of any human form of communication. The film shows the sometimes comical, but above all astonishing story of this attempt to make a man out of an ape. After the film, there will be a talk with Stijn Bruers on animal rights, etc.

The Brussels theatre-maker Isabelle Dumont has put together a ‘cabinet of curiosities’, a colourful collection of ‘artificialia and naturalia’ – art objects and wonders of animal kingdom. She was guided by her amazement, always welcoming surprises, and is now sharing her delight with the public. On the basis of this collection she tells a story about the relationship between man and the animals down the ages.

The philosopher Vinciane Despret asks 26 intriguing and pertinent questions about what animals do, want and ‘think’. This yields marvellous and sometimes hilarious stories, told by scientists, animal-tamers, zookeepers, etc. Stories that make us think. We are screening two short documentaries made in 2005 by film-maker and activist Didier Demorcy, to which Vinciane Despret also contributed, one on sheep, one on wolves.

The Swedish-German performance artist Eva Meyer-Keller is obsessed with food. In Death is certain (in the Kaaistudio’s in 2007) she condemned a number of vegetables to death. Now she’s cooking up a series of disasters. She will be bringing them to you live, using soup, juice, sauce and other ingredients. How hungry does an earthquake make you?

Fri 08.06 - Fri 08.06.12

Very occasionally, something makes your hair stand on end. Nick Steur’s FREEZE! is just such a performance: small in scale, big on ideas. Nick Steur creates a pile of natural stones. He doesn’t use any glue or trickery, just intense concentration and ‘a balance between my own willpower and that of the stone’.  FREEZE!, won the KBC Young Theatre Prize 2011 at Theater Aan Zee.

It all started in my garage, when I was listening to a radio programme about obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). This turned out to be the first step on a winding path where I came across a white bear, a green plant, and lots of folks answering to the name of Robert. Robert Plant is the result of this spiritual journey...
