Ai!
Kaaistudio's
Thu 15.12.11

Working Title Platform #3 - In Ai! Mestre and Simoes develop a physical practice that brings a body charged with a strong sense of catastrophe to the fore. Mestre and Simoes want to observe a body affected by an outside force that gives the impression of being incapable of controlling this force — a body that exists in an illogical space, in paradoxes and incongruities. The body in a space that is ‘out of tune’.

Thu 15.12.11

Working Title Platform #3 - This piece explores the way athletes experience movement, the
physicality of athletes and sportsmen: their bodies, their beauty, their
rhythmical movements, their facial expressions, the sounds their
actions produce, and how the experience of competitive sports is
structured for the spectator: how athletic events are organized, how
they are portrayed and commented on in the media (through television,
documentaries, radio and newspapers).

On the very day when, ten years ago, the great German writer W.G. Sebald died, Ictus and the French composer Jérôme Combier are paying him a tribute, based on his novel Austerlitz. Combier wrote a ‘soundtrack for an imaginary film’ and will design the setting with the French video film-maker and stage designer Pierre Nouvel. Johan Leysen will read from Sebald’s novel.

Working Title Platform #3 - Does the manner in which we look at things influence the world around us? The Reflecting Pool exhibition explores the ways in which techniques such as framing and editing, mainly associated with cinema, are also used in dance and visual arts to challenge our gaze.  Running parallel with the dance installations Birdwatching and One/Zero by Benjamin Vandewalle and Erki De Vries, you enter a world in which physical and mental movement are always an extension of each other.

The choreographer Benjamin Vandewalle and the artist Erki De Vries invite the audience to sit in an extraordinary mobile installation that acts as an observation post. Dancer, room and audience all become part of a choreography that constantly redefines their mutual relationships. Nothing is what it at first appears.

How far can campaigners go before their actions cross the boundary of ‘democratic propriety’? Can one restrictively interpret ‘free expression’ as that which is put forward verbally, in writing or in pictures? Where does a democratic society set the threshold of tolerance with regard to action that goes further than simply proclaiming an idea? When does an action stop being an act of free expression and degenerate into vandalism, hooliganism or worse?

Spoken World - What do you believe in? Do you have any dreams? Eight young people from Brussels, between 15 and 25, will be taking these questions as the basis for a speech they will write and give at the Spoken World Festival. The director Dirk Verstockt will be coaching them.

Spoken World -
Can we still be sure about the difference between what is real and what
is performed in our super-mediatised world? Perhaps ‘Speech!’ deals with that topic. Barbara Matijević and Giuseppe Chico examine the fact that we experience everything as stories, whether it be social and political matters or everyday events.

Spoken World - From Colombia to Europe, the drug trade leaves a trail of destruction through societies all over the world. How are we to resolve this? With harsh repression? Or is legalisation a better solution?

Spoken World - When Pablo Emilio Escobar, the notorious, ruthless drugs baron from Medellin, was finally shot, a speech was found in his back pocket, intended for the day he would be elected president. Taking these mythical notes by Escobar as their inspiration, Mapa Teatro
has made a paradoxical production on the legalisation of drugs.
