Heart of Darkness is without doubt the most famous work by the
Polish-English writer Joseph Conrad (1857-1924). This ‘parable’ has
inspired many artists, a.o. Francis Ford Coppola (Apocalypse Now).
Duister hart
is Josse De Pauw’s adaptation of Conrad’s novella, in which
he also performs on stage, directed by Guy Cassiers.

What is personal? How do you present it or express it in artistic work? Christine De Smedt took these and other questions to fellow choreographers Jonathan Burrows, Alain Platel, Xavier Le Roy and Eszter Salomon. On the basis of these interviews, she created portraits of four artists which evolve into a portrait of herself.

Mon 16.04 - Tue 17.04.12

A documentary in which two stories cross: one about the birth of the atom bomb, the other about the German anthropologist Aby Warburg, who studied the Hopi Indians. The film is preceded by a lecture performance. Jerry Killick, one of the original Forced Entertainment actors, steps into Aby Warburg’s shoes and gives his lecture on the religious symbolism of the Hopi Indians.

Led by the director and artist Ann Van de Vyvere (Firma Irma), a group of
‘observers’ has been studying reality in all its forms. Together, they bring surrealism to reality. How can we be sure of what we know? How do we measure what is normal and what is not? Hocus Focus explores the boundary
between the enthralling reality and real science.

In 1880, the French socialist politician Paul Lafargue, son-in-law of Karl Marx, wrote the satirical treatise Le doit à la paresse. If he were to return to our world today, he would shake his head in astonishment. What value does our society attach to relaxation, rest, silence, sleep and laziness? What influence can theatre have on your mental attitude? Fortunately, we have theatre-maker and artist Kris Verdonck and dancer and choreographer Alix Eynaudi who lovingly lull you to sleep in EXIT ...

The dancers Cynthia Loemij (Rosas), Mark Lorimer (Rosas, ZOO) and the cellist Thomas Luks (Il Fondamento, Leporello) enter into a dialogue between sound and movement. For their musical basis they chose 11 Capriccios for cello by Joseph Marie Clément dall’Abaco (1710-1805).

For quarter of a century, Forced Entertainment have been confirming their position as trailblazers in contemporary British theatre. In their new production, they take their fill of hopeful clichés and other dreams of the future. Tomorrow’s Parties offers a playful, poignant and at times delirious look forwards to futures both possible and impossible.

The intention behind nothing’s for something is to make the
hidden moments in life visible and expose the reality behind the visible
world. Their sources of inspiration are Paul Klee, who danced while he
painted, Rainer Maria Rilke, the perfectionist of form and method, and
Georges Perec, the master of stories of everyday life. In nothing’s for something,
Avdal and Shinozaki go back to their roots and allow the experiences of
their site-specific projects to permeate this production for larger
theatres.

Abke Haring zooms in on two characters, a woman and a man who share a past they have not yet dealt with. Flou is a dialogue, a duet, a duel. In this new production – her second as a theatre-maker at the Toneelhuis – Abke Haring intensifies her search for the balance between silence and the spoken word, and between choreography and conversation.

In her latest creation, Cindy Van Acker goes further in her meticulous, almost scientific research into the relations between body and mind, sound and rhythm. Six dancers on the stage. As if in a relay race, they shift their formations into quintets, quartets, trios, duos and sextets.

The Flemish-Swiss choreographer Cindy Van Acker is passionate about the human body. In her minimal dance idiom she seeks interactions between body, space, time and sound and plays with light and shade, visible and invisible, acceleration and deceleration. We are showing two of her solo pieces in the Kaaistudios, her latest group creation at the Kaaitheater and in both venues the films that have been made of her solos.
