Untitled Feminist Show
Untitled Feminist Show
Kaaitheater
Wed 23.05 - Sat 26.05.12

An American of Korean origin, Young Jean Lee develops theatre that destabilises cultural representations of identity and refers us back to our own stereotypes. This time she tackles the politics of gender. Featuring six charismatic female theoreticians and performers, Untitled Feminist Show humorously undermines the social constructs of the masculine and the feminine.

CANCELLED DUE TO ILLNESS KRISTINN HRAFNSSON - An afternoon of debate and discussion that looks in greater depth at one of the themes of Book Burning: our need of factual knowledge to understand the world, and of stories to give meaning to the facts. Pieter De Buysser et Hans Op de Beeck will explore this topic together with Kristinn Hrafnsson, spokesman for WikiLeaks and the
number two of the organization founded by Julian Assange.

Fri 18.05 - Tue 22.05.12

This performance is a joint venture by the artist Hans Op de Beeck and writer-actor Pieter De Buysser. The piece physically links visual art and theatre, with Hans creating an object and Pieter writing a play to perform alongside it. Hans has constructed a chest with hidden cupboards and drawers. Pieter has devised a story about storing things away and forgetting them, a story that’s part blood-curdling fairytale, part edgy road movie.

CANCELLED - We are inviting Árpád Schilling to give a one-off talk, putting his trilogy into
context along with the relationship between the social and the artistic
that exists throughout his work. It will be about the choices made and
the theatre’s political dimension in the troubled context of Hungary
today. It presents a unique opportunity to meet an impassioned artist.

In A papnő (The Priestess), we see an experienced actress leaving the theatres of Budapest to teach drama to young Roma children in the countryside. The Priestess is as much a documentary film as it is a socio-educational experiment conducted on stage with teenagers. A disturbing theatrical adventure.

With END (2008), the performance artist Kris Verdonck created an apocalyptic performance about the possible end phase of human society. The creative process behind this remarkable performance has now been documented and described in detail in Listen To the Bloody Machine - creating Kris Verdonck’s END. Its authors are Marianne Van Kerkhoven (Kaaitheater) and Anoek Nuyens, who worked as dramaturge and student-dramaturge in END’s production team. The book will be presented in Brussels in the presence of its authors as well as the artist, who will be interviewed by Christophe Slagmuylder, director at the Kunstenfestivaldesarts.

The charismatic performer Benoît Lachambre transforms on stage like a moulting animal. But is he in a mode of regression or one of advanced evolution? Or do these terms relate more to a society that has lost any sense of the future?

Brussels-American dancer and choreographer Eleanor Bauer is a fast-emerging talent on the international dance scene. Her work is an intelligent, humorous reflection of the modern world. In this new piece, she uses body, dance and movement to bring performers and audience
together, enabling them to create a common experiential space.   Tentative Assembly (the tent piece) is the second part of a trilogy that began with A Dance for the Newest Age (the triangle piece), created last year at the Kaaitheater.

Drumming (1998) is undoubtedly one of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s most fascinating choreographic works: a dazzling dance set to a powerful score for percussion by Steve Reich, performed. The Ictus Ensemble bring this compelling score to life with breath-taking precision. Drumming is a stunning journey, a wave of pure dance and pure sound, a vortex of life energy.

Dood Paard presents a performance of the oldest play we know in Western history: The Persians,
written by Aeschylus (b. 525 BC). In this play he criticises the
imperialist course taken by Greece in his day, and warns against Greek
pride. Dood Paard has made a new adaptation of the play and reduces the
tragedy to its core: a story about the overconfident enemy.

Fri 20.04 - Sat 21.04.12

Kate McIntosh is already known for performances such as Dark Matter and Hair from the Throat, evidence of a rich, somewhat bizarre imagination and superior craftsmanship. In Untried Untested,
she once again goes hard at it. The performers test various materials
and each other and so find themselves in situations that are often
funny, frequently unexpected and sometimes downright dangerous.
