De neoliberale strafstaat

De neoliberale strafstaat

The gap between rich and poor in Belgium has never been so big. One Belgian in five has difficulty making ends meet. One immigrant child in three grows up in poverty. This makes Belgium one of the worst pupils in the European class. But what is near the top of the political agenda? Criminality. Safety. Zero tolerance. Public nuisance. Loitering teenagers. But it should not be all one-sided. When they do not succeed in tackling the real problems, politicians always come back to the same thing: repression, as the political philosopher Bleri Lleshi says in De neoliberale strafstaat. On the basis of theoretical research and practical experience, Lleshi shows where thirty years of neoliberalism is rapidly leading us.

An architect talks about the city he has built. Gradually we realise that the city is imaginary. This is the story of Thing, a book and video film by artist Anouk De Clercq, about the memory of cities, about architectural ghosts of the past that infect the present, and about imaginary buildings.

In 2009 Jan Ritsema initiated AGORA, a project whose ambition is to reclaim for theatre the open, public quality it once possessed. It resulted in 3 theatre pieces of which the first one, Oidipous, my foot, premiered at the Kaaitheater in 2011. Now a book has been published: a collection of raw materials in preparation for a fourth act.

De Keisnijders (The Cobblestone-Cutters) is the first novel by the
theatre-maker and philosopher Pieter De Buysser. It is a compelling and
generous story about a utopian place and its occupants in the mid-21st
century. A gripping and fascinating voyage of discovery to the heart of
tomorrow’s Europe. Classic storytelling and challenging literature that
raises fundamental questions.

Oikos, the think-tank for socio-ecological change, has invited researchers and professors to think about the future of the city together. What is the present condition of the city? What are the greatest challenges and what response can we make to them. What might the main elements be of a future-oriented urban policy?

Mon 14.05.12

With END (2008), the performance artist Kris Verdonck created an apocalyptic performance about the possible end phase of human society. The creative process behind this remarkable performance has now been documented and described in detail in Listen To the Bloody Machine - creating Kris Verdonck’s END. Its authors are Marianne Van Kerkhoven (Kaaitheater) and Anoek Nuyens, who worked as dramaturge and student-dramaturge in END’s production team. The book will be presented in Brussels in the presence of its authors as well as the artist, who will be interviewed by Christophe Slagmuylder, director at the Kunstenfestivaldesarts.
