Unleash your inner genius and build your own robot. You don’t have to be a technical wizard – you will get a long way with a little imagination and the expert guidance of the German artist Ralf Schreiber and his associate, the scientist Christian Faubel. Your robot will be brought to life on an overhead projector. And afterwards you can take it home. There is a workshop for children from 8 to 12 and an open workshop for older children and adults.

Agency (founded by Kobe Matthys in 1992) compiles lists of ‘quasi things’, things that raise doubts: are they part of nature or culture, are they subject or object, the consequence of creation or of evolution? The list Agentschap presents at Wiels focuses on the notion of copyright and came about in collaboration with architects, choreographers, film-makers, painters, journalists and lawyers.

Fri 13.02 - Sat 21.02.09

In his video animations for Performatik, Luca Buvoli creates free associations on Futurist themes. He combines personal and historical stories: interviews with Marinetti’s daughters and adepts of Futurism, archive documents about political meetings and memories of the numerous air shows he visited in his youth. Buvoli questions the authoritarian and threatening side of our fascination with velocity and power.

Fri 13.02 - Sat 21.02.09

In the installations by Lawrence Malstaf, the visitor is often an essential physical part of what occurs. They are living installations and in this sense can be compared to performances. In Compass (2005), the visitor straps an ‘orientation machine’ around his waist. It then leads him along a virtual route.

Fri 13.02 - Sat 21.02.09

In the late sixties the American Lawrence Weiner thoroughly renewed the definition of art and sculpture. He considers and describes his language pieces as sculptures. The language pieces can be fixed or mounted on any sort of support: using adhesive letters or paint, on stickers or badges, or as audio on a CD. For Performatik, Strombeek cultural centre is applying Lawrence Weiner’s work to the facades of the organisations taking part. This art can also literally be worn in the public space in the form of a specially-designed badge with the same work.

WORKING TITLE FESTIVAL -  Memory, identity and history play a central role in the work of Mekhitar Garabedian. An Armenian migrant in Europe, he touches on very personal problems, but his discourse transcends the anecdotal and expands to a universal level. Together with Céline Butaye he worked on a publication full of photos from his archives. Both have been involved in one another’s work in the past.

THE ART OF SURVIVAL PARCOURS - Portraits of people sitting still and listening intently. But who are they listening to? Who are the others who are talking? The video work by the Beirut performance artist Lina Saneh questions the concepts of monologue and dialogue. Lina Saneh creates solo productions and works together with Rabih Mroué.

Tue 11.11 - Sat 15.11.08

THE ART OF SURVIVAL PARCOURS - Roger Bernat, a theatre-maker who originates from Belgium, has for some years been creating highly socially-committed films about and with various social groups, such as transvestites and taxi drivers, in Barcelona. In Public Domain he once again breaks open theatre and involves the audience in the events in a way that is subtle but non-participatory.
