Apart from the ‘official’ gospels there is also a gospel according to Judas. In it Judas relates his version of the facts: he did not ‘betray’ Jesus. In the Judas Passion by the composer Dominique Pauwels and the writer Pieter de Buysser Judas tells his story from a modern perspective. An apology of the weakness of human nature.

Russia in 1920: the artistic and social revolution are flourishing but the bewilderment is total when Stalin’s merciless trials start. The lyrics in this musical theatre show consist of a literal transcription of the final minutes in the trial of Fyodor Bukharin interwoven with extracts from the work of Daniil Harms, another victim of Stalin’s terror. William Kentridge is responsible for the animated film and the directing, and François Sarhan, whose fantastic L’Nfer was performed at the Kaaitheater earlier in the season, wrote the music.

Liquid Room is a concert that has the style of a festival: music is played on three stages for hours on end without any breaks, and members of the audience walk in and out as they please. In this musical continuum you can listen to work by Horacio Vaggione, Lois V. Vierk, Riccardo Nova, Helmut Oehring, François Sarhan and Cédric Dambrain. This will be supplemented with remixes and electronic improvisations.

The Swiss duo comprising Dominik Scherrer and Christoph Hefti works in the fields of music, film and fashion (Christoph is a member of Dries Van Noten’s creative team). They together make up the art-pop combo Taxi Val Mentek. They perform a frivolous electro-vaudeville concert, halfway between cabaret and video art.

Stef Lernous, director with Abattoir Fermé, and the young composer Daan Janssens have been working with two young singers and two musicians on a study project based on the work of H.P. Lovecraft. The atmosphere is one of chaos, gloom, madness and ancient gods. Lovecraft is one of the ‘grandparents’ of modern science fiction and horror. His writing presented the prospect of a horrible world for mankind.

Wed 18.02.09

The Continental Superstar exhibition at the Musée du Cinquantenaire consists of a display of four big dance organs from the early 20th century. The new technology developed by the brothers Tony and Frank Decap has transformed these old café organs into a high-tech ensemble of computer-controlled organ units. Together with a group of live musicians, the composer Walter Hus will explore the extremes of these new possibilities in compositions where stirring techno beats alternate with experimental soundscapes.

Waste and excess seem to be fundamental to modern man’s definition of himself. Can we turn our urge to waste in a more immaterial direction? And can art, as a form of symbolic waste, play a part in this?

It will be performing four of Bach’s cantatas from the Christmas Oratorio. What is so special is that the public will be invited to join the ensemble in singing several of the chorales. The Bach Chorus will be augmented by the Dulcisona choir, and of course by you.

The European Saxophone Ensemble (ESE) is brand-new. It is made up of twelve young musicians from various countries in Europe. The number of musicians playing reflects all types of saxophones (sopranino, soprano, alto, tenor, baritone and bass). The aim of the ensemble is to break down the borders separating various musical styles: classical, improvisation, avant-jazz and traditional music go hand in hand here.
