Mascot

In H, an incident (2013) Kris Verdonck and dancer Marc Iglesias Figueras present a man who has no opinion of his own and, as a survival tactic, tests out all sorts of ideologies. He effaces himself for ‘the good cause’ and eventually gives his life for his country. In that performance, inspired by the work of the Russian writer Daniil Harms, this man becomes the mascot of a political party.

In the new production, the figure of the mascot plays a central role. In Untitled the person disappears into his work clothes and in this way reflects on the phenomenon of the ‘working poor’ and the industrialisation of mankind. The relationship between man and object, which is an essential element in Verdonck’s work, takes on layers of social and political meaning.

Untitled is Kris Verdonck’s third solo, following EXIT (for Alix Eynaudi) and M, a reflection (for Johan Leysen). Untitled develops the phenomenon of the ‘released figure’, the performer who is ‘cast’ onto the stage as if by a mechanical construction.
