Seven skins

The Flemish-Swiss choreographer Cindy Van Acker starts her new solo with sentences, images and ideas she derives from Friedrich Nietzsche. For example the idea that ‘loneliness has seven skins’. Or his idea of the Umwertung aller Werte (the revaluation of all values). Another source of inspiration is the tormented bodies and anatomical figures in the work of Berlinde De Bruyckere. That brings her to what is organic and constantly mutating, in a new view of the physicality of the dancer, of form and deformation, surface and depth, life and death. It brings her to the first definition of the word chaos: a new emptiness, a new nothing.

• Cindy Van Acker creates performances like sculptures. In 2005, Romeo Castellucci invited her to represent Switzerland at the Venice Biennale. She then agreed to do the choreography for in Castellucci's Inferno (Avignon Festival, 2008) and Parsifal (La Monnaie, 2011).
