Polyphony

During WWI, sixteen million people died, including ten million soldiers. In FRONT, directed by Luk Perceval, the unfortunate soldiers are given a human face again. Not by means of an historical reconstruction or a costume drama evocation, but by an evocative polyphony, portraying specifically the trench warfare on the plain of the river IJzer. FRONT gives an impression of life on both sides of this front line: with accounts in German, French, Dutch and English. The German script is based on Erich Maria Remarque’s novel Im Westen nichts Neues (1929). For the script on the Allied side sources include the war diary of the French volunteer soldier Henri Barbusse, published in 1916 as Le Feu. Apart from this, characters have been created on the basis of documents of the time, letters and newspaper cuttings. The texts are in several languages and are translated and shown as surtitles and are accompanied live by the music of Ferdinand Försch.
