In the Sky I Am Walking (Am Himmel Wandere Ich). These are the first words of the song cycle Indianerlieder (1972) by Karlheinz Stockhausen, one of the most influential composers of the second half of the 20th century. The vocal ensemble HYOID and choreographer Benjamin Vandewalle are adapting this iconic but rarely performed work. They are creating a gesamtkunstwerk that aims to reveal the vitality and timelessness of Stockhausen’s music. They are abandoning the original scenography in order to place the audience at the very centre of the three-dimensional ritual. This choreography without dancers is a musical sensation that plays with perception. Sound, movement, and space take you back to the essence of Stockhausen’s composition: an exploration of sound vibrations.

• Benjamin Vandewalle – who has been an artist-in-residence at Kaaitheater since 2017 – constantly explores new perspectives and experiences. Productions such as Walking the Line, Birdwatching 4x4, and the installations Peri-Sphere and Inter-View have appeared on the Kaaitheater programme. Vocal ensemble Hyoid specializes in contemporary music and does not shy away from questioning traditional concert formats.

One loves jumpstyle and toilet humour, another loves ballet and self-written love songs, while the third loves to observe the world through his camera lens and is secretly an accomplished beatboxer. If it weren’t for this production, these three probably never would have met, but it is their love of dance that has brought them together here.
